Fashioning Models
|
Decide who will model halves, thirds, fourths, and sixths. Make the halves models by cutting each of twelve 3-inch by 12-inch paper strips into two equal pieces; the thirds models by cutting each of eight paper strips into three equal pieces; the fourths models by cutting each of six paper strips into four equal pieces; and the sixths models by cutting each of four paper strips into six equal pieces. Using a different color pencil than the other group members, color your fraction models.
Copy onto cards the numbers 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23.
In turn, each group member selects a card. The number on the card tells the number of pieces each group member needs to use to model an improper fraction. Each group member models and writes the improper fraction, and then models and writes the improper fraction as a whole or mixed number.
