Use groups of 3.
Materials: 18 index cards, watch or clock with second hand, notebook paper
What do we have in Common?

Copy the list of items below onto index cards. Shuffle the cards and place them face down on the table. Decide who will be player 1, player 2, and player 3. Player 3 will be the timekeeper.

The first player begins by turning a card over. Player 1 has 10 seconds to write a word that would have a common unit with the word on the card. However, player 1 should not tell the name of the common unit. For example, if the card said dog, you could choose the unit pets and write down the word cat. Player 2 then writes a word that has a common unit with the other two words. For example, player 2 could give the word elephant using a common unit of animals. The game ends when either 1) one player challenges the other player, or 2)when a player cannot name a word within the given time limit.

Challenging: If player 1 challenges player 2, player two must name the common unit that he or she was using. If player two cannot name a reasonable common unit, then player 1 wins. Player 3 will rule on the reasonableness of a common unit.

Continue by rotating the timekeeper and the players. Play several rounds. Hint: You must set restrictions on the use of units. For example, the units things and objects by themselves would be too broad.
