Materials: 1 sheet of paper, scissors, 6 marbles, a newspaper and/or magazine
It's All In How
You See It

Copy onto a piece of paper the 4 ratios listed below. Your goal is to work with your partner to match the 4 ratios with one of the items below. Each ratio and item can be used only once.

  • 6 marbles
  • newspaper and/or magazine
  • piece of paper
  • class statistic
For example, start with the ratio 1 to 2. If half of your class has blond hair, then you could use the ratio 1 to 2 for your class statistic or if 3 out of the 6 marbles are green you could use that for your 1 to 2 ratio. Now find a ratio for 1 to 2 from one of the four items above and write it next to 1 to 2.

Next, take the ratio 2 to 3 and represent it by using one of the three remaining items from the list above. Finally, find ratios for 3 to 4 and 1 to 5 using the remaining items. Try to be creative with your statistics.

Make sure that you record what you have found to represent the ratio next to that ratio. When all groups are finished, discuss what ratio was the hardest to represent. Then, discuss your different representations and the strategies you used to find the ratios.
