Materials: 12 index cards, notebook paper
A Designer Game

Number the index cards 1 through 12. Give each group member 3 index cards. On the front of each of your index cards, display the first four stages of a fractal of your own design. You may also choose to display the first four figures of a pattern of your own design. See pages 24-26 for examples of fractals and other patterns. Try to make your fractal or pattern challenging.

On the top of your paper, list the numbers on the backs of your 3 index cards, so that you can remember which fractals or patterns are yours, then pass your index cards to the person on your right. You should now have 3 new index cards. On your paper, write the number from each index card and then draw the next three figures for that fractal or pattern. After 5 minutes, pass these new cards to your right. Continue passing cards until you have drawn every fractal or pattern. You should stop passing and drawing when your own cards return to you.

Finally, as a group, check the drawings to determine which are correct. Share some of your fractals and patterns with the class.
