Plot Your Age

As a class, calculate every student's age in months, rounding to the nearest month. List the ages on the chalkboard.

Draw a number line on the chalkboard that includes the least to the greatest age of the students. Place each number in its appropriate place above the number line. Next, draw a box-and-wisker plot for the data. Make sure that you label the lower extreme, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and upper extreme.

Discuss the shape of the box-and-wisker plot. Where are the ages more spread out? Where are the ages closer together? Why do you think it is this way?

Next, find each student's age in days. Discuss what you think the box-and-wisker plot for this data will look like. Will there be similarities? Will there be differences?

Draw a new number line on the chalkboard that is the same length as the first number line. Place it directly under the first number line. Label it with an appropriate scale from the least to greatest age of the students in days. Draw a new box-and-wisker plot using this number line. Compare box-and-wihisker plots. Check to see if your answers to the above questions were correct.
