Function Frenzy

Make the spinner shown.

Spinner

Then, cut each index card in half so that there are a total of 40 index cards. Copy each function in Table 1 onto half an index card. Shuffle these function cards and place them face down in a pile on the table. Finally copy each number in Table 2 onto half an index card. Shuffle these cards and deal 16 to each player.

Table 1:

x - 2 4 + x x + (-3) -5 + x
3x + 2 -2x + 3 4 - 2x -x + 1

Table 2:

-8 -7 -6 -6 -5 -5 -4 -3
-3 -3 -3 -2 -1 -1 -1 -1
0 0 1 1 2 2 3 4
4 4 5 5 6 8 9 10

Player 1 begins by turning over the top function card and spinning the spinner. The spinner number is the input for the function. If the player has the correct output number for the function, then he or she discards that number face up, forming a discard pile, and spins again. If that number is not in his or her hand, player 1's turn is over and he or she places the function card on the bottom of the pile. Player 2 then turns over the next card and spins the spinner, discarding if they have the correct output for the input and function given. Play continues until one person is able to discard all of his or her cards. That player is the winner. Reshuffle the function cards as needed.
