Clips at a Clip

Sit in a circle on the floor. Decide which group member will be the timekeeper and decide who will be player 1, who will be player 2, and who will be player 3. Players 1 through 3 take thirty paper clips.

When the timekeeper says "Start," players 1, 2, and 3 toss a paper clip into the middle. After this, players 1, 2, and 3 toss a paper clip into the middle every 3, 10, and 18 seconds, as shown in the table below. (Each group member can time his or her throws by counting silently or by looking at the second hand of a clock or watch.) When all three group members toss a clip at the same time, the timekeeper tells how many seconds have passed. The number of seconds is the least common multiple for the three numbers. Continue in the same way, trading roles each time, until you have played four rounds.
