Group Activity Cards
Use groups of 2.
Materials: Cups and counters, integer mat, index cards, paper

Xpressions
Each group receives an integer mat, 4 cups and 20 counters, and 10 index cards. Copy each expression below onto an index card. Shuffle the cards and place them face down on the table.
Expressions to put on cards:
twice a number plus 2
the sum of 5 and a number
6 more than a number
4 times a number
11 more than two times a number
twice a number plus 8
twice a number plus 3
the sum of 7 and a number
9 more than a number
5 more than 3 times a number
The first student begins by drawing an expression card. Without revealing the expression to the other student, he or she first records the expression onto his or her paper and then represents the expression on their integer mat using cups and/or counters. For example, if the expression read "2 times a number plus 3", a student would place two cups and three counters on the mat. The second student then sketches a drawing of the cups and/or counters onto his or her paper.
Next, students reverse roles, with the second student drawing an expression card and the first student making a sketch of what the first student displays on the integer mat. Play continues until all expression cards are used. Students then check each other's work, awarding 1 point for each expression they correctly represented to the other student. Incorrect representations should be corrected.
Finally, each student finds the total number of counters for each sketched expression if each cup is to be filled with 3 counters. Students may use the cups and/or counters to find each value. Students again check each other's work, awarding 1 point for each correct answer.
