Group Activity Cards

Use groups of 3. Materials: Index cards, counters, integer mat, paper Can I Have Your Number?

Each group receives 36 index cards, one integer mat, and counters. Then each one-digit integer between -10 and 10, not including zero, is written on two index cards. Shuffle the cards and then place them face down in a stack on the table.

The first player draws two cards and uses the integer mat and counters to represent the sum of the two numbers. This player then records the addition sentence on their sheet of paper. The sum of the two numbers drawn represents that player's score. For example, a draw of -5 and 2 would result in a score of -3. Play continues with each player taking a turn drawing two cards, representing the sum on the integer mat, and recording the addition sentence on their paper. When all the cards have been used, each player determines his or her final score by totaling the sums of each hand recorded on their paper. (Hint: Find the total of all the negative values, then the total of the positive values, then add these two totals.) Students should check each other's work. The player with the greatest score wins. Play several rounds.
