Status Quo or No?

Copy onto cards the number sentences listed below. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile. Label equal sections of a spinner "Change" and "No Change." Determine which partner will go first.

The first partner selects a card and spins the spinner. If the spinner points to "No Change," the first partner evaluates the expression on the card and writes the value. If the spinner points to "Change," the other partner can try to rewrite the expression, using the same numbers and symbols, to decrease the value of the expression. Partners take turns drawing a card and spinning until all the cards have been used. Both partners then find the sum of the values of their expressions. The winner is the partner with the greater sum.

Expressions to put on cards:

6 + 8(12 - 2)

20(10 ÷ 2)

7 · 4 + 4 · 1

13 + 5(9 + 3)

6 + 8 × 1 + 1

(18 + 16) + 4(3 + 5)

15 + 9 × 3

8(7) + 8(2)

(11 + 2) × (6 + 3)
