Group Activity Cards

Use groups of 2.
Materials: Small bags of colored candy (enough for each group of 2 to have 1 bag), paper
Can I have a Red One Please?

Each group of 2 receives a small bag of candy. As a class, you will be comparing the proportion of each candy color to the total number of candies in the bag.

Begin by making a table like the one below. Next, take 10 pieces of candy out of the bag without looking. In Column 1, make tally marks for each of the candy color. For example, if you picked 5 red pieces of candy, make 5 tally marks by Red. Put the 10 pieces of candy back in the bag. Take out 10 pieces of candy again. In Column 2, make tally marks for the colors of the candy. Continue this procedure until you have recorded tally marks in all 10 columns. Next, in the column labeled average, determine an average number for each color of candy. For example, to get an average for the Red row, you would sum all of the tally marks in the Red row and divide that number by 10. Round the answer to the nearest whole number.

Next, fill in the column labeled proportion. In the row labeled Red, the proportion should be red pieces of candy to total pieces of candy, where the red pieces of candy will be the number in the average column and the total pieces of candy will be 10.

Finally, check your proportions by counting the entire bag of candy. Were your proportions accurate? Why or why not? Have the entire class compare proportions.
