How Far Can We Jump?

As a class, you will create a frequency table using the distance that each student can jump. Before recording any jumping distances, decide what a possible range for the class might be and record this value on the chalkboard.

Begin by making a line on the floor using tape. Form a line behind this line. To find how far you can jump, you will stand with both feet behind the line and jump with both feet together. No running starts are allowed. After the first student jumps, the student behind him or her measures the distance in centimeters from the tape to the heel of the student's foot. Record this distance on the chalkboard. Continue until all students have jumped.

Now, work with a partner to determine a range for the set of data. How close did the class come to the estimated range? Next, determine a scale for your data and decide on an interval. Finally create a frequency table of the data using poster paper and markers.

When all groups are finished, compare frequency tables.
