Take Charge

Read the following.

Harvey-Sloan, a department store, uses the equation to determine the minimum amount a new charge-card customer must pay one month after receiving his or her card. In this equation, b stands for the total cost of the items charged during the month.

Using newspapers and/or catalogs, write the prices of five items you would like to buy at a department store--for example, clothes or a television set. Then suppose that you have just received a Harvey-Sloan charge card and that you use it to charge the five items whose prices you found. Trade papers with another group member. Find the total cost of the five items and then, using the equation above, find the minimum payment this person must make. Compare your results. Which group member has the highest minimum payment? Which group member has the lowest minimum payment?
