Group Activity Cards

Use groups of 2. Materials: Graphing calculator, graph paper, ruler A Rectangle Challenge

As a group, you will use your graphing calculator to create geometric shapes.

Begin by drawing a coordinate plane on a sheet of graph paper. On the coordinate plane, draw a rectangle. Label the coordinates of the points that represent the vertices of your rectangle. Next, graph these points on your calculator. Do the points form a rectangle? If not, check to see that you labeled each point with its correct ordered pair. Also check to see that you entered each ordered pair correctly.

Without using graph paper, write down the coordinates of four points that you think will form a larger rectangle. Graph these points on your calculator. Then, graph these same points on your graph paper, using the same coordinate plane as you used before. Connect the points. Did you make your rectangle larger? Was it longer, wider, or both?

Repeat this same procedure for a square and a parallelogram.
