Go the Distance
|
Use masking tape to mark off a distance of 15 feet in the classroom or in the hallway. Each group member walks 15 feet at his or her normal pace, while the other group members record the time in seconds it takes to walk this distance. Then each group member rolls an object such as a ball or a roll of tape 15 feet, while group members record the time it takes for the object to roll 15 feet.
For each person and object divide the distance traveled (15 feet) by the number of seconds. This gives you the unit rate. Now multiply the denominator by 3,600 to change the unit from seconds to hours and divide the numerator by 5,200 to change feet to miles. Compare the speeds in miles per hour.
