Summing Up

Copy onto cards the rational numbers shown below, one per card. Shuffle the cards and then divide them evenly.

Each partner removes from his or her hand pairs of cards showing multiplicative inverses. Then one partner places one of his or her remaining cards face up. If the other partner has the card showing the multiplicative inverse, he or she takes both cards. Otherwise, the other partner places any card face up, and the first partner takes both cards.

Continue in the same way, taking turns playing the first card in each round, until neither partner has any cards in his or her hand. Then find the sum of the products of the pairs of cards that you removed from your hand or that you won. The winner is the partner with the greater sum.
