Group Activity Cards

Use groups of 3. Materials: 12 index cards, scissors, counters Falling Off the Ends

Each group member receives 4 index cards and writes an inequality, which must be solved, on each card. At least two inequalities should require more than one step to solve, and exactly two inequalities must have solutions where the inequality symbol is the opposite from that given in the original inequality. Solve each inequality and write the solution on the back of the index card.

Place your cards in a pile in front of you, problem side up. Player 1 begins by showing his or her first inequality to each of the other players. The other players copy this problem onto their scratch paper and try to find its solution. The first of the two players to do so is awarded one point. Player 1 checks each student's solution. If either student finds the correct solution and finds player 1's solution to be incorrect, he or she receives two points instead of one. Play continues with Player 2 revealing his or her first problem to the other two players. The player with the most points after all problems have been solved is the winner.
