Group Activity Cards
Numbers
and Operations
Use groups of 2.
Materials: Calculator, index cards
|
Step by Step
|
Copy onto cards the numbers shown below, one per card. Shuffle the cards and place them face down in a pile.
One partner selects a card. Then, working together, both partners obtain an estimate for the square root of this number using the following steps.
| Step 1. |
Determine which two whole numbers the square root of the number falls between. |
| Step 2. |
Find the median of the two numbers you found in Step 1. The median gives you your first approximation for the square root of the number you selected. |
| Step 3. |
Divide the number on the card by the median you found in the previous step. Round the quotient to the nearest tenth. Find the median of this quotient and the median you found in the first step. This is your second approximation. |
| Step 4. |
Repeat Step 3 to obtain additional approximations. Stop when you get two approximations in a row that are the same rounded to the nearest tenth. |
| Step 5. |
Check the results using a calculator. |
Trade roles and repeat the activity. Continue in the same way as time allows.
