Making Zeros

Let a roll on the red number cube represent a negative number and a roll on the yellow cube represent a positive number. Copy and complete the following 8 equations by rolling the indicated colored number cube.

  1. x + [yellow] = [yellow]
  2. x - [yellow] = [yellow]
  3. x + [red] = [yellow]
  4. x - [red] = [yellow]
  5. x + [yellow] = [red]
  6. x + [red] = [red]
  7. x - [yellow] = [red]
  8. x - [red] = [red]

Take turns solving each equation using cups, counters, and an equation mat. Write your answers to each problem on the back of your paper. Then trade papers with another group and attempt to solve their problems. Check your answer with those on the back of the paper.
