Group Activity Cards

Problem Solving

Use groups of 2.
Materials: Spinners, counters
You've Got It Backward

Each partner copies onto a separate sheet of paper the figure shown below. Make sure that a counter will fit in each square. Label equal sections of two spinners "Up," "Down," "Left," "Right."

Each partner secretly thinks of a number between 0 and 100. Place a counter on the shaded square. This counter represents the number you choose.

Each partner spins a spinner and moves his or her counter one square in the direction indicated on the spinner. Evaluate the expression in the square for your number and write the value on a sheet of paper. Write Circled one in the square to indicate your first move. Repeat the above, using the previous value you found and writing the number of each move in the appropriate square, until you move outside of the square. Write the last value you found on the appropriate blank. Trade cards with your partner. Work backward to determine his or her original number.
