Procedure for the Activity

Step 1 Estimate the number of people in the U.S. in 1990 that were over 5 years of age. Explain the method you used to estimate the population.
Step 2 Use your population estimate from Step 1 to find the percent of people over 5 years of age that spoke each language in 1990. Round your answers to the nearest hundredth of a percent.
Step 3 Experts predict that the total population of the U.S. in 2025 will be 337,815,000 with 22,551,000 under the age of 5. Estimate the number of people in the U.S. that will be over 5 years of age in 2025.
Step 4 Use the data in the table and your estimate in Step 3. Predict how many people over 5 years old will speak each language in 2025.
Step 5 How accurate do you think your predictions are in Step 4? Explain your reasoning.
