Procedure for the Activity

• Suggest to the students that one student should read the letters and another student should record the each letter as a tally mark.
• Compile all the data for the class into a large table on the chalkboard. See how individual results compare to the results of the whole class.
• Have students compare the letters found in children’s books to the letters found in other types of text.
• Have students compare the percent of each letter found to the percent of each letter found in letter games, such as Scrabble.
