More About the 3-Over-2 Feel

Analyze the Structure

Notice how "Daa Dwene" is counted off with six beats to a measure. (It is in 6/8 meter.) In 6/8 meter, there are six pulses (small beats or subdivisions of the beat) per measure notated with eighth notes. Percussion Part 1 has a note played on every beat. It divides the measure evenly into six parts.

When percussion Part 2 enters, it plays four notes evenly throughout the measure, dividing it into four equal parts. The relationship between these two percussion parts could be represented like this:

Percussion Part 1 and 2

For every six notes in Part 1, there are four notes played by Part 2. (The ratio is three notes in Part 1 for every two notes in Part 2.)

Practice the 3-Over-2 Feel

  • Play the first ten seconds of "Daa Dwene."
  • Clap or pat along with Part 2 when it enters. Repeat until playing Part 2 feels natural.
  • To test your ability to understand and "feel" Part 2, play the song again from the beginning. This time, as soon as the count-off is over, clap or pat Part 2 along with Part 1.
