Examine Electronic Textures

Song Writing Activity

Study the Lyrics

  • Listen to "Silent Space."
  • Follow the notation provided below and study the lyrics, which begin at 0:45. The lyrics are influenced by the science fiction themes. They suggest a possible story of a group of humans floating in a spaceship.

Write New Lyrics

Print a form for writing your own set of lyrics.
  • Think about ideas and themes for your lyrics. Perhaps you could continue with the theme above, possibly explaining the future of the humans as they wander the universe. You might take a completely new direction, telling a story that takes place in another dimension, such as under the sea.
  • If necessary, place the electronic textures again and think about how the new theme or setting complements them.

    "Silent Space" -- Arrangement 1

    "Silent Space" -- Arrangement 2

"Silent Space" -- Arrangement 3

  • Decide whether you would like your lyrics to rhyme as they do in the sample lyrics above. Just remember to use the same number of syllables as in the sample.
  • When you have written two verses that satisfy you, play your chosen arrangement of the song and sing along with your lyrics at 0:45. Use the vocal guide tracks to help you. The "E an octave higher" will be your starting pitch. Sing in your falsetto or head voice, if necessary.
  • On your worksheet, complete the Performance Activity section.
  • Optional: Play your chosen arrangement and perform your song for others.
