| Hip-Hop: Mix Rhymes and Beats
Introduction
In 1979, a song titled "Rapper's Delight" was released
by the Sugarhill Gang. Rather than feature sung vocals, the song used
catchy rhymes that were spoken, or "rapped," over the music. Because of
this song, the nation took notice of a new style of music that today is
called both hip-hop and rap.
This project explores the popular music style that
had been developing in American inner-city areas, though in many respects
its roots can be traced back to African and Jamaican musical rhyming styles.
Since then it has grown to reflect and represent a diversity of lifestyles
and opinions.
In this project,
you will:
- Evaluate how hip-hop tracks accompany rap verses.
- Explore different styles of rapping, including
Caribbean.
- Write and perform rap verses.
- Create music in one of the following ways: write
and perform original lyrics; experiment with vocal rap techniques;
improvise and perform percussion and instrumental parts to accompany
hip-hop tracks.
