Hip-Hop: Mix Rhymes and Beats
Section 3 Write a Rap Verse
Analyze the Lyrics
- Listen again to rap
example 3. This track has four beats to a measure. Pay close attention
to the count-off at the beginning of the example to hear where the beats
fall.
- Below is the first line of lyrics. Each word that
lands on a beat is underlined.

- Without listening to the audio file, repeat the
line a few times, clapping a beat at a slow tempo and synchronizing
the underlined words with the beat.
Write New Lyrics
- Think of another set of lyrics to accompany the
track. Beats 2 and 4 should rhyme, or nearly rhyme. An example is provided
below.

- Write at least four lines of your own. You can rhyme
beats 2 and 4 of a line, or every beat 4 of consecutive lines. The following
lines have both examples.

- To help you keep the rhythmic flow, underline the
words that occur on the beats in your verses.
Perform Your Lyrics
- Rap your verses over the accompaniment track you
chose in Section 1.
Choose a Performance Activity in which you will work
more with rap verses and hip-hop musical ideas.
