Investigate Layers of Sound
Songwriting Activity
Analyze Lyrics
- Play "Black
to Gray" and follow the lyrics, which begin at 0:27.
Black turns to gray.
Gray leads the day.
Day falls to night.
Night turns the lights out.
- Notice how each line of the lyrics connects to the
next in two ways: by continuing the theme and by repeating the last
word of the previous line as the first word of the next one.
Write New Lyrics
- Write two verses of lyrics in which each line is
connected to the next, like the sample lyrics. Use the same number of
syllables per line in your lyrics (4-4-4-5). For simplicity, you could
use the structure of having each line read "_______ turns to _______."
Evaluate and Perform Your
Lyrics
- When you are satisfied with the two verses,
perform them along with your chosen arrangement. Listen for the vocal
guide parts in the audio file as your cue to begin.
"Black
to Gray"--Arrangement 1
"Black
to Gray"--Arrangement 2
"Black
to Gray"--Arrangement 3
- Evaluate how well your lyrics match the feel of
the arrangement. Make revisions, if necessary.
- Optional: Perform your arrangement
for others.
Advanced Songwriting Activity
- Write additional verses of lyrics for the melody.
Have the lyrics complete a circle of thought, as shown in the sample
lyrics, where the images start and end with darkness.
