 Problem of the Week
Chapter 5

Solutions

Teachers Notes:

Problem 1:
Using the equation c = λν, determine frequency in Hertz or sec-1

a. green light: 3.00 x 108m/sec x (1/557.7 nm) x (1nm/1 x 10-9m) = 5.38 x 1014Hz or sec-1
b. red light: 3.00 x 108m/sec x (1/630.0 nm) x (1nm/1 x 10-9m) = 4.76 x 1014Hz or sec-1

Problem 2:
Using the equation E = hν or E = hc/λ determine energy of the photon

a. green light: 6.626 x 10-34Jsec x (5.38 x 1014sec-1)= 3.56 x 10-19J
or 6.626 x 10-34Jsec x (3.00 x 108m/sec) x (1/557.7 nm) x (1nm/1 x 10-9m) = 3.15 x 10-19J
b. red light: 6.626 x 10-34Jsec x (4.76 x 1014sec-1)= 3.56 x 10-19J
or 6.626 x 10-34Jsec x (3.00 x 108m/sec) x (1/630.0 nm) x (1nm/1 x 10-9m) = 3.15 x 10-19J
