Although some activities at this USGS site are geared towards younger students, there is a lot to do for older students as well. Click on cool stuff to do, then find out how to make a pair of 3D glasses. Use the glasses when you create a 3D interactive world. What is a digital elevation model? How is it used in mapping?

National Geographic Map Machine
This National Geographic site has all kinds of information about the world that can be displayed on different types of maps. The site opens to a map of the world that you can zoom in and out on to pinpoint a particular place. Then you can select a new theme to locate features on that original map. For example, you could zoom in on North America, then click on select a new theme and click on mineral resources to see the mineral resources found in North America on a new map. Finally, click on map key to identify these resources.
