Science Probe I Technology Activities

Chapter 3

Internet

1. As directed by your teacher, select three elements from the Periodic Table of the Elements—a metal, a transition element, and a transuranium element. Perform an Internet search for these three elements to find the following information about each:

  • Who was the discoverer, and what was the date of discovery?
  • What is the density, melting, and boiling point of the element?
  • What are two major uses of the element?
  • Is the element toxic to humans?

Prepare a multimedia presentation that takes the approach of a salesperson giving a sales talk to a group of prospective customers; give this presentation to your classmates. Below is a web site to get you started:

2. With the help of your teacher select one of these careers you think you might like: chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, metallurgist, pharmaceutical engineer, or polymer (plastics, fibers, etc.) chemist. Conduct an Internet search for information about the career you selected.

Determine:

  • How much education is needed?
  • How much the job pays?
  • What specialized training is needed, and how much it might cost to get the necessary education and training?
  • How much competition is there for entry-level jobs?
  • How much security is there in the job?

Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

Application Software

Activity 3B – Use a database program to make your data table for this activity. There should be one field each for entering Element and Symbol and six fields for the category Properties. (You will be answering the questions in step 3 of the Procedure in this field.) All fields should be entered as text fields. Label the Properties fields as Color, State of Matter, Luster, Density, Metal, and Other. Enter your information in these fields as you perform this activity. Use the sort function to group all metals together. Print the file, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
