Chapter 9
Internet
1. Heart disease and circulatory problems are a major cause
of illness or death in the United States. Select a disease of the heart
or circulatory system and do an Internet search. Obtain answers to the
following questions:
a.How is the disease detected?
b.What causes the disease?
c.How can the disease be prevented?
d.What treatment is available for the disease?
e.What is the long-term prognosis for the disease?
Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates
of what you have learned. Use bibliographic citations of the sources in
your class presentation. Below is a web site to get you started:
PubMed –National Library of Medicine Search Service
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/
2. Open-heart surgery has become a routine procedure to
correct certain problems with the heart. Conduct an Internet search to
find out:
a.How many different kinds of surgical procedures are
in use today?
b.What might be the cause for the illness the surgery is correcting?
c.What symptoms are evident in this disease?
d.What the prognosis (outlook for recovery) is for the patient?
Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates
of what you have learned. Use bibliographic citations of the sources in
your class presentation.
Application Software
Activity 9C – Use a spreadsheet program
to make your data table as shown in this activity. Record the data in
the spreadsheet as you perform the activity. Use the mathematical functions
of the spreadsheet to do the calculations for finding the average heat
rate for each exercise time for your group. Record the rest of the class
averages in your data table. Use the graphing function to plot a graph
of heart rate and total number of minutes as directed in the activity.
Use this graph to share your information with classmates. Print the final
spreadsheet with all calculations, and secure it in your SCIENCE PROBE
Logbook where you will answer the discussion questions.
