Chapter 16

Internet

1. Conduct an Internet search to find out how the AIDS virus reproduces. Find out:

a.What happens to its chromosomes as it enters a cell?
b.What happens when it reproduces in the cell?
c.What happens when it eventually leaves the cell?
d.How does it undergo meiosis? Prepare a multimedia presentation that shows the chromosomes of the virus in the various stages of its reproductive cycle.

Prepare a multimedia presentation that shows the chromosomes of the virus in the various stages of its reproductive cycle. Below is a web site to get you started:

Roche-HIV.com

2. Mutagens have been found in our environment, some placed there by human activities and some occurring naturally. Much research is being done to find out what is mutagenic (causes mutations) and why. Conduct an Internet search to find what current research (within the last five years) has found.

a. How can mutagens change the order of the molecular base of a gene?
b. What naturally occurring substances are known mutagens?
c. Which, if any, components of air and water pollution are known mutagens?

It might also be helpful to correspond through e-mail or talk in a web discussion site with a biologist or geneticist familiar with or working on the mutagenic project. Prepare a multimedia presentation to inform your classmates of what you have learned.

Application Software

Activity 16D – Use a graphics program to perform this activity. In place of clay models, draw the models and the various stages and events of meiosis and mitosis as directed in the activity. If an animation feature is present, use animation to demonstrate the stages and events of meiosis and mitosis. Demonstrate the entire procedure of the activity to the class.
