This DVD with the accompanying Workshop Facilitation Guide provides all the materials needed for short, facilitator-led workshops. Workshop participants view video clips, evaluate what they have seen, and discuss how the strategies used in the video content can be extended into their classrooms or teaching practices.
Materials may be used in after-school sessions or multiple videos may be combined for longer science workshops. Perfect for use by a leadership team, coach or mentor, or Science Department Head, the activities are designed for ease of use with minimal preparation.
Educational Strategies DVD
This DVD contains 5 videos that emphasize current issues in today's science
classroom. Each issue is defined, discussed and illustrated through a
separate professional development video. The DVD contains the following
- Literacy Strategies: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking
- Differentiated Instruction
- English Learners
- Standards-Based Instruction
- Assessment Strategies
Each video begins with a discussion on the topic, providing a clear overview of the key issues and its importance in science education. Next, viewers see lesson excerpts from various science classrooms that demonstrate instructional strategies and techniques used to address the video topic. Strategies are modeled by using a variety of middle school science content.
In place of the classroom demonstrations, the Standards-Based Instruction and Assessment Strategies videos present excerpts of science department meetings. In these segments, viewers watch department meeting collaboration to determine local curriculum and assessment. Video viewers see how a group of science teachers work together to analyze their standards to determine their day-to-day curriculum, align standards to instruction and assessment, select assessment items and evaluate the students test results to determine effectiveness.
Workshop Facilitation Guide
The Facilitation Guide contains workshop activities and information on conducting the workshops. Workshop activities, 4-5 for each video, have Activity Masters to foster participants' discussion and collaboration. Each workshop activity provides opportunities for science teachers to evaluate, discuss, and extend the strategies demonstrated in the video.
