Haitian Celebrations

It's May—time for people of Haitian ancestry to celebrate. They circle these special dates on their calendars.

May 1 Haitian Agriculture and Labor Day

May 18 Haitian Flag Day

May 20 Birth of Toussaint L'Overture in 1743

Last Sunday in May Mother's Day

There's one other time of the year when Haitians and Haitian Americans take to the streets, waving blue-and-red flags with pride and joy. It occurs on January 1, Haiti's Independence Day. What a way to start the New Year!
