Konpa

If you want some high-voltage sound, tune in to the beat of konpa, Haiti's most popular form of music. It's a mix of Caribbean sounds—merengue, carnival music, and salsa—with some Brazilian samba and American "soul" and rock 'n' roll thrown in for extra energy.

Musicians play guitars, pianos, saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and the ever-present conga drums. Thump, thump, thump. The drums drive home the pounding rhythm, setting the beat for dance. Who can resist the sound? Can you?

Activity
Locate some konpa, or compas, music on a CD or tape. Pick a few selections, and act as a DJ for your class.
