The Rise and Fall of Saddam Hussein

On December 13, 2003, U.S. forces captured ousted Iraqi president Saddam Hussein in Operation Red Dawn.

Upon Hussein’s capture, President George W. Bush said, “In the history of Iraq, a dark and painful era is over.”

Many contested the U.S.-led war waged on Iraq and its place in the “War on Terror.” No one, however, contested the capacity for evil of the volatile Saddam. He was a ruthless dictator who used chemical weapons on his own citizens, executed hundreds of thousands of people, and terrified his Arab neighbors.
