Economic Conditions Improve
in Africa South of the Sahara
After decades of poverty and economic decline, conditions in more than half of the 49 countries of Africa south of the Sahara are improving. “Things are finally starting to click,” said Eric Chinje, a World Bank spokesperson.

Serious problems, including wars, dictators, AIDS, epidemics, and drought, continue to plague many African countries. But for the first time, conditions are beginning to improve. “All you read about Africa is disaster,” said Djibril Diallo, a Senegalese representative to the United Nations. “But most of Africa is something else. I see a whole chain of reasons for hope.”

Throughout much of Africa, business people and others appear optimistic about the future. “This continent is bursting with ideas and energy,” said Moktar Thiam, who owns a computer company in Mali. “All we need is some calm and security, and you watch what happens.”
