
Chapter 11: Southern Europe

Introduction
In this chapter students learned about the countries of Southern
Europe. Many of these countries had civilizations that influenced
the development of western culture and civilization. Ancient
Greece is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of democracy.
Many other ideals and institutions, including the Olympic
Games, began there as well. These athletic competitions have
become an established part of world culture.
Lesson Description
Students will visit the site of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
By clicking on an interactive map of Greece they can visit
important archaeological sites, museums, and recent discoveries.
They will visit Olympia, the site of the ancient Olympic Games.
They can see the stadium and the ruins of the Temple of Zeus.
After answering questions about the Olympics they will create
a poster advertising the Games in ancient Greece.

Standard 6: The geographically informed person knows and understands
how culture and experience influence people's perceptions
of places and regions.
Standard 17: The geographically informed person knows and
understands how to apply geography to interpret the past.
Instructional Objectives
- The student will be able to describe the ancient Olympics.
- The student will be able to create an advertisement that
promotes the ancient Olympics.
