Introduction In this chapter you have read about the countries of Southern Europe. Many of these countries had civilizations that have influenced the development of western culture and civilization. Ancient Greece is sometimes referred to as the birthplace of democracy. Many other ideals and institutions began there as well. The Olympic Games were one of these institutions. Run your mouse over "Olympia" on the map. Click on Ancient Olympia in the menu that appears. Browse through the photographs of Ancient Olympia and read the descriptions of these archaeological sites.
