Introduction
In this chapter you have read about the world's second-largest country, Canada. In the province of Quebec, the influence of the original French settlers is still present. French is the predominant language and French customs are still practiced. Feelings are so strong that many Quebecois would like to establish their own independent nation.

Start at the CBC Newsworld Flashback Web site.

  • Click on the year “95” at the top of the screen.
  • Read the information about the Quebec Referendum. At the bottom of each page, click on the link next to “There’s More” until you arrive at the page of “Links.”
  • Apply what you have learned to answer the following questions.
1.  What was the purpose of the 1995 referendum in Quebec?


2.  What was the “Quiet Revolution”?


3.  Describe the campaign arguments used by people on both sides of the referendum issue.


4.  Summarize the results of the 1995 referendum.


5.  Use the Internet or other library resources to find out where the Quebec–Canada issue stands today. Write a paragraph summarizing your findings. Be sure to note the sources where you found the information. Share your results with the class.
