Chapter 18: Mapping the Third World

In this chapter you learned that many Third World countries were at one time colonies. For centuries western European countries colonized land in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. The effects of colonization are deep and lasting, and Third World countries present those of us of the First World with a difficult reality—fully three-quarters of the world's population lives in conditions we would find appalling.

Learn more about colonization and colonialism by visiting www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/colonialism. Explore the various links, and be sure to click on "List of extinct countries, empires, etc." at the bottom of the screen. On poster board create a map of the world on which you color Third World countries the same color as the countries that colonized them. For example, Mexico was once a colony of Spain, so on your map they would be the same color. Explain any differences between yours and your classmates' maps.
