Chapter 3: Becoming Conscious of Culture
|
Ironically, the culture to which we are most accustomed is often
the culture we least notice. We are too used to it, and many
aspects of it are invisible to us. One thing sociology does
is to define culture and to make us think about things we might
not think about otherwise. Studying sociology, then, is a good
way to improve yourself not just as a student, but as a person.
Fine tune your sense of culture. Start by visiting the What
Is Culture? Web site at http://www.wsu.edu:8001/vcwsu/commons/topics/culture/
culture-index.html#top Once you have done this, carry
a journal with you, and for several days record things you
would not have previously noticed. As your final entry, explain
how your research helped increase your awareness.
