Introduction
     In this chapter you learned that John Marshall's discovery of gold in 1848 caused a stampede of gold seekers to California. These "forty-niners" came from all over the globe in search of the valuable nuggets. Go onto the Internet to examine several photographs of the California Gold Rush.

  • In the Search for Keywords box, type gold rush.
  • Click on Silver & Gold: Cased Images of the California Gold Rush at Oakland Museum of California.
  • Examine several of the photographs and their accompanying text.
  • Answer the following questions.
