"The Other Half"

Introduction
Students have read that urban reformers such as Jacob Riis worked to improve the lives of the urban poor. In this lesson, students will view a series of Riis's photos and read from his book, How the Other Half Lives.

Lesson Description
Students will visit a web gallery to view some of Riis's photographs and read excerpts from his book, How the Other Half Lives. They will then answer questions about what they have examined.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will examine conditions of poor people living in big cities at the turn of the century.
2. Students will identify the work of Photographer Jacob Riis.
