Introduction
     In this chapter, you read about President Roosevelt's progressive efforts—including his attempts to promote conservation. Just as Roosevelt did back then, the nation's leaders today recognize the importance of preserving the land's natural resources. Go to the Internet to take a closer look at one of North America's most precious resources-its forest land.

Start at the World Conservation Monitoring Centre Web site.
  • Click on Statistical Analysis of Global Forest Conservation.
  • Scroll down and click North America.
  • View several of the maps and charts and answer the following questions.
1. On the map showing North American forests and protected areas, what are the two main categories of forests?


2. What type of forest appears to be most common in North America? To what category does it belong?


3. According to the bar chart showing total area of forest in each country with the percentage protected, about how much forest land exists in the United States? In Canada?


4. Which country protects a greater percentage of its forests? Why do you think this is so?
