"Into the Great Unknown"

Introduction
Students have read about Lewis and Clark's exploration of the West. In this lesson, they will read a detailed time line of the journey.

Lesson Description
Students will examine the time line and answer questions pertaining to it. They will then write a short editorial about Lewis and Clark's journey.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will be able to find specific events on a narrative time line and answer questions about those events.
2. Students will use this knowledge to write an editorial honoring Lewis and Clark.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. He received instruction in botany, zoology, celestial navigation, and medicine.
2. The group reached the Continental Divide and expected to see the mythical Northwest Passage—a water route to the Pacific Ocean; instead all they saw were more mountains.
3. The group nearly starved; they were befriended and fed by the Nez Percé.
4. The group allowed an accompanying slave and Native American woman to vote on the decision—such rights would not be granted to these groups for years to come.
5. Editorials will vary; they should be written in a clear and concise style and show a knowledge of the explorers' trip.
