"America the Beautiful"

Introduction
     In this chapter, you learned about a group of artists, known as the Hudson River School, who helped to stir Americans' sense of nationalism through their romantic paintings of the country's landscape. One the School's more prominent members was Thomas Cole. Cole immigrated to the United States from England in 1819 and was quickly taken by America's sprawling geography. Log on to the Internet to examine some of Cole's works.

Directions
Start at the National Museum of American Art Web site.
  • Click on Collections and Exhibitions.
  • Click on Browse the Collection.
  • Scroll down to the search bars.
  • Type in Cole in Artist Last Name box.
  • Type in Thomas in Artist First Name box. Then click Browse.
  • Examine the four paintings presented, then answer the following questions. You can enlarge the paintings by clicking on them.
1. What is the general subject of the paintings?


2. Based on Cole's paintings, what words might he have used to describe the nation's landscape?


3. How are humans depicted in the paintings? What might be Cole's message in depicting them in this way?


4. Which of the paintings do you like best? Why?
