Introduction
In this chapter, you learned about
a group of artists, known as the Hudson River School, who helped
to stir Americans' sense of nationalism through their romantic
paintings of the country's landscape. One the School's more
prominent members was Thomas Cole. Cole immigrated to the United
States from England in 1819 and was quickly taken by America's
sprawling geography. Log on to the Internet to examine some
of Cole's works.

Start at the National Museum of American Art Web site.
- Click on Collections and Exhibitions.
- Click on Browse the Collection.
- Scroll down to the search bars.
- Type in Cole in Artist Last Name box.
- Type in Thomas in Artist First Name box.
Then click Browse.
- Examine the four paintings presented, then answer the
following questions. You can enlarge the paintings by clicking
on them.
