"Escape to Freedom"

Introduction
Students have read about the rift between Northerners and Southerners over the issue of runaway slaves. In this lesson, they will learn about the issue firsthand by examining a replica of an actual ad seeking the return of a slave.

Lesson Description
Students will examine the ad and answer questions about it. They will then explain why they would not return a slave to bondage in a fictional letter written to the landowner who placed the ad.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will learn to analyze a historical document and to answer questions about it.
2. Students will learn to translate their feelings about the evils of slavery into a clear and well-constructed letter.
