CAPÍTULO 6
En busca de casa o apartamento

Student Activity

Objective

  • Encourage students to learn about housing in the Hispanic world as they plan to "buy" an apartment or house

Notes

  • In this activity students are asked to choose an apartment or house in the Costa Blanca region of Spain. They are going to make their "purchase" with money that they "inherited" from a distant relative. In your role as "probate lawyer," assign the following amounts to the students randomly. This will ensure that some students will choose apartments and others will choose houses according to the size of their family and the amount of their "inheritance." Suggested amounts: 10,000,000 pesetas up to 70,000,000 pesetas. (Use multiples of 10.) Once the students have selected their properties, have them convert the prices into dollars using the Currency Converter link. Depending on what real estate costs where you live, the students may be surprised by the prices!
  • Students may not be able to answer the questions about the region unless they visit more than one site. Encourage them to use the maps at the sites to figure out what sea the Costa Blanca is on.
  • Have students study the floor plan of their house or apartment when they list the rooms on their worksheet. If no floor plan is available, have them describe the exterior of the house and the features of the community.
  • Additional helpful vocabulary for this activity:
  • amueblado

    furnished

los edificios (de apartamentos) (apartment) buildings
    IVA tax
    un jardín terminado landscaped garden
1ª (primera) línea de playa right on the beach

Expansion

  • If students are able to download the photos and print them out, have them prepare a travel brochure about their cities. Display students' brochures around a wall-size map of Spain in the classroom. Have students vote on which city is the most interesting, beautiful, etc.
  • If you would like to plan a Spanish food day with your students, click on the link below. You will find recipes for local food specialties from several of the cities featured on the interactive map of Spain.
