John Biggers
United States, 1924–2001
John Biggers’ work depicts powerfully graphic images of everyday life of African Americans. He studied at the Hampton Institute in Virginia and then, after the Second World War, at Pennsylvania State University, where he worked with Austrian refugee Viktor Lowenfeld, eventually receiving his doctorate in 1954. He spent more than 30 years teaching art at Texas Southern University in Houston, retiring in 1983.
His distinctive realist style is deeply moving, demonstrating the struggle of his people in carefully rendered scenes of poverty and
hardship.
